HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT)–A 5K walk/run brought people out to Veterans Park in Hoover to help families with autism Saturday afternoon. Organizers of the Walk for Autism event estimate about 500 people took part in the fundraiser. They say some of the money raised by the walk will go to educate parents and teachers of young people with autism about how to help them maximize their potential.
According to the Autism Society of Alabama, autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the nation and affects more than 45,000 people in Alabama alone. Saturday, April 13th, there is a meeting at the North Shelby Library from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It will help parents learn how to draft individual education plans for children with autism.
