BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: According to Chief Mardis, the male who was transported to UAB Hospital has died.
Mardis says it was a mother and son who died in the fire.
The fire is still under investigation.
ORIGINAL: A fire broke out on Avenue H in Birmingham on Monday night.
According to Birmingham Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis, the fire started around 9 p.m. in a one-story, wood-framed home.
Mardis says the building sustained 100 percent smoke damage and 70 percent fire damage.
One person, a male, was transported to UAB Hospital for smoke inhalation.
According to Mardis, an elderly female died inside the home.
Firefighters extinguished the flames are working to put out hot spots.
