Shelby County parent on mission to keep schools safe

CHELSEA, Ala. (WIAT) – A parent of a student in Shelby County is on a mission to keep all students in Shelby County schools safe.

Mike Echols created an organization called “Communities for Safer Schools” after an incident at Chelsea Middle School in February.

Echols’ goal is to raise more than $2 million to place armed guards in all Shelby County schools.

Sheriff Chris Curry says the department already has deputies stationed at schools located inside the county.
