New inhaler may provide better treatment for asthma

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A new asthma inhaler is giving doctors the ability to create a more accurate treatment plan.

The disease affects 25 million adults and 8 million children nationwide.

The new inhaler went through a cyclical trial period in which a wireless sensor sits on top of a regular inhaler.

When a patient takes a puff, a map displays when and where the inhaler was used and records the amount of medication used.

The device sends the information to a doctor.

Researchers hope the inhaler will help them determine which areas of the country are hot spots for asthma sufferers. They hope that information will help them minimize contact triggers.
