BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A new art exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the civil rights struggle is on display in Birmingham.
The unveiling of the exhibit took place at Vulcan Park atop Red Mountain on Saturday.
It’s called “A Place of Our Own: The Fourth Avenue District, Civil Rights and the Rise of Birmingham’s Black Middle Class.”
The artwork shows how the city’s African-American community developed its own cultural center and business district following the Jim Crow laws of the 1900s.
The exhibition will be on display at Vulcan Park through the end of September.
