New kid-friendly emergency rooms gaining popularity

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – For some children the emergency room is a scary place.

Now, a number of kid-friendly emergency rooms are being built across the nation.

Medical experts refer to the facilities as “Ouchless emergency departments.”

The rooms act as a positive distraction for kids as they receive treatment.

“A lot of times the pain they receive can be alleviated through distraction or getting their mind onto something else or having them be involved in an activity,” Child life specialist Kate Kolbeck said.

Medicines in the “Ouchless ERs” are typically delivered using nasal sprays instead  of syringes.

Likewise, instead of stitches, surgical glue is used to mend wounds.
