Birmingham, AL (WIAT)-The Samford football team held its final scrimmage of spring practice Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.
The scrimmage was the second the Bulldogs have been through this spring. Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he was excited about how his team performed on Saturday.
“My initial impression is, I was probably as excited about today as I’ve been about any day we’ve had this spring, or maybe even since we’ve been here,” Sullivan said. “I thought both sides made plays. I thought the enthusiasm and physicality were really good. I’ll be anxious to watch the film, but I was very excited about today.”
The team’s first scrimmage took place last Saturday, April 6. Sullivan said he liked the improvement he saw from his team’s first scrimmage to the second one.
“I thought the tempo of the offense was much better than it’s been,” Sullivan said. “I thought the execution was better. I thought defensively, they gave up some plays, but when they had to make some plays when we got in the red zone, they knocked them back and took them out of field goal range. As a head coach, you want to see that on both sides and I was able to do that today.”
Returning starting quarterback Andy Summerlin was held out of the scrimmage, but backups Ben Neill and Carson Barnett both saw significant action during the scrimmage. Neill completed 13-of-22 passes for 110 yards, while Barnett was good on 12-of-20 passes for 150 yards.
Junior Stanley Robinson led the Bulldogs’ running game, rushing seven times for 38 yards. Redshirt freshman Jake Wilks had seven rushes for 30 yards, including a five-yard touchdown run, for the only score of the scrimmage. Jeremiaha Gates rushed four times for 20 yards.
Redshirt freshman Emmanuel Obajimi led all receivers with six catches for 76 yards. Gates caught five passes for 28 yards on the day. Junior Kelvin Clay caught two passes for 20 yards, while Robinson had two receptions for 14 yards.
Defensively, sophomore Bobby Wilson had six tackles. Sophomore Michael Pierce, Jr., had four tackles, including one sack. Senior Justin Shade also had four tackles in the scrimmage.
Saturday’s scrimmage was the 12th of 15 workouts the Bulldogs will go through this spring. The team has three practices scheduled for next week. The Bulldogs will practice Monday at 4 p.m. in full pads, Thursday at 4 p.m. in shorts and Friday at 4 p.m. in full pads.
Sullivan said his team still has some work to do in those final three practices.
“We’ll continue to work on our fundamentals,” Sullivan said. “We’ve basically been going against each other in our own schemes, but now what we’ll try to do is work in some of the other schemes we’ll see through the course of the year.”
