BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —– The UAB football team went through itsfirst full-scale scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning at Legion Field.
Blazers’ head coach Garrick McGee said he saw some good things on both sides of the ball.
“I thought we had a really good time out here today,” said McGee. “We had a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm. There were plays made on both sides, which is the way a scrimmage should be. I thought they did a good job.”
Sophomore Austin Brown was the most impressive quarterback statistically. Brown finished the scrimmage with 147 passing yards as he hit 13-of-15 passes with one touchdown toss, a 13-yarder to running back Darrin Reaves.
Jonathan Perry finished with 97 yards passing, connecting on 5-of-10 passes with a pair of touchdowns (43 yards to Reaves and 29 yards to tight end Kennard Backman). Freshman Jeremiah Briscoe hit 11-of-16 passes for 85 yards.
Running back Greg Franklin was the rushing leader with 70 yards on nine attempts, scoring two touchdowns on runs of three and 15 yards. Reaves tallied 29 yards on the ground on only five carries to go along with his two receiving touchdowns.
Jackie Williams caught four passes for 48 yards while Jamarcus Nelson had six grabs for 23 yards. Reaves finished with two catches for 56 yards, both for touchdowns, while Backman recorded three receptions 78 yards. D.J. Vinson had two catches for 33 yards and Nolen Smith had two for 36. Acorye White registered five receptions for 13 yards.
From the defensive side, safety Calvin Jones was the tackles leader with eight stops. Jay Davis, now a safety after switching from wide receiver, had seven tackles in the scrimmage. Jake Ganus, Destin Challenger, Devon Brown and Shaq Jones all had six tackles. Challenger notched the only interception in the scrimmage.
Chris Rabb had a pair of sacks with Ganus, Daron Wright, Daniel White, Neal Gray, Max Elliott and Tevin Crews registering one sack each.
McGee said he thought the team played with fewer errors Saturday than in last week’s session.
“Last week at this time, we made a lot of penalties on offense, a lot of alignment penalties, false starts and some small things like that. I think there were a couple today, but that has mostly been cleaned up.
“I think with the details of executing an offense, I definitely saw some positive moves to where we need to be.”
The Blazers have six practices remaining in their spring drills, culminating Saturday, April 27 when the 2013 spring game is held atWest Campus Field at 11:00 a.m. They will return to the practice field on Wednesday, April 17.
