Home run leads UAB over Tulsa in softball

UAB Blazers

Tulsa, OK (WIAT)—With junior designated hitter Kristen McGrath’s solo home run over left field in the top of the sixth inning, UAB took the Conference USA series from No. 17/21 Tulsa, 1-0, on Sunday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.

“I am immensely proud of the relentlessness of this team,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “Kristen McGrath’s home run really shows that one swing of the bat can change a game. I’m proud of her performance this weekend, along with the rest of the team. This is a quality win for us, especially against an opponent like Tulsa.”

UAB is now 26-10 on the year with a 13-2 mark in C-USA action while Tulsa drops to 32-11-1 and 12-3 in league.

The win marks the first time Tulsa has dropped a series at home since the 2008 season.

Both sides went scoreless after five full frames as starting pitchers Lauren Webster (10-3) and Amy Creger (17-4) combined for only six hits.

Junior Lannah Campbell entered the circle in the bottom of the sixth after a Golden Hurricane leadoff double, and she struck out two batters before a groundout to freshman Caitlin Attfield ended the inning. Campbell picked up her fifth save of the year with two innings pitched and three strikeouts.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with UAB holding on to its 1-0 lead, Tulsa designated hitter Middlebrooks drew a leadoff walk, and was advanced to second by a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Edmiston. Kernen then hit a single to short to put two on base.

Campbell picked up a crucial strikeout on pinch hitter Sill before senior third baseman Kate Armstrong fielded a grounder to junior first baseman Megan McGrath to give the Blazers the win.

On the weekend, sophomore second baseman led the team with four hits, a home run, a double and a 1.000 slugging percentage. As a team, the Blazers recorded a .260 batting average, a .455 slugging percentage and a .374 on-base percentage.

Up next, UAB travels to Troy on Tuesday to round out a six game road swing, with first pitch set for 5 p.m. CT. The Blazers will then return to the UAB Softball Field to host UTEP in a three-game series on April 20-21. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. CT, while Sunday’s finale will start at Noon CT.
