New health insurance tax credits available to some in 2014

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Starting in 2014, more than 300,000 Alabamians will be eligible for new health insurance premium tax credits.

A report released on Tuesday includes county-by-county data that details which income levels will be affected by the tax credits.

The report from the National Health Consumer Organization Families USA says that families in different income brackets – those ranging as high as $94,000 for a family of four – will soon be protected from having to spend more than a set percentage of their income for health coverage.

In Jefferson County, just over 44,000 people will be eligible for the credit.

54 percent of those eligible will be families with incomes in the federal poverty level.

Approximately 47 percent of those eligible will be white, 43 percent will be black and nearly 6 percent will be Hispanic.
