HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) – Workers at Southern State Fertilizer in Hanceville want neighbors to know this type of disaster is not going to happen there.
Neither anhydrous ammonia nor ammonium nitrate are stored at the plant.
In fact, workers say for safety reasons it’s rarely used in north Alabama.
Even without anhydrous ammonia, the facility is inspected once a year, they also have monthly safety meetings.
Anhydrous ammonia is a liquid source of the fertilizer nitrogen, it’s applied directly to the soil by farmers to boost crop yields … but it is highly explosive.
