BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – It’s that time of year. Time to plant your carrots, peas and melons. But not everyone has the space for a garden spot at home.
The answer for many of those people is a community garden and there are many of them scattered around the Birmingham area. Brock Seabrook has had a spot at the Jones Valley Teaching Farm for a couple of years. He lives downtown and doesn’t have the green space to do anything like a garden at home.
But it’s not just for the downtown dwellers. There are several other community gardens around. The problem – most don’t have the resources to provide for everyone. That’s why they need volunteers and donations.
The Community Garden Coalition for Birmingham will be holding a Spring kick-off this weekend at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. It goes from 11am-4pm. They’ll have all the information you’ll need to either start a community garden of your own or join one in your community.
