Jefferson County may cap salary of next lead attorney

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – At least two Jefferson County commissioners are on board with placing a cap on the amount of money their next lead attorney will earn.

Commissioners Sandra Little Brown and David Carrington support the idea of setting the salary at about $250,000.

“Our past county attorney put in some time in the county and had institutional knowledge but we need to put a cap on such a salary so that it’s more comparable to regional salaries, Commissioner Brown said.

Commissioners forced long time attorney Jeff Sewell to retire after expressing concerns with job performance. At the end of his 20 year county career, Sewell was earning about $390,000 per year.
