TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – The University of Alabama was narrowly hit by the April 27, 2011 tornado. Many off campus housing was hit. Scott Atterton, Danielle Downs, Ashley Harrison, Melanie Nicole Mixon, Morgan Sigler, & Marcus Smith were Alabama students that lost their lives on that terrible day.
Just weeks before the massive tornado on April 10th a group of weather enthusiasts got together to spot storms. They didn’t know what was coming on April 27th. Patrick Reilly who is now a senior at UA created the club. He and 10 others gathered at the Woods & Waters to see the skyline of Tuscaloosa. Their group was next to CBS42′s Marlon Price and Leigh Garner as they shot world famous video of the tornado.
The group then went down to 15th street and started pulling people out of the rubble. Now the interest in weather have cause a boost in membership.
However what they worry about the most. The incoming classes that did not live through the tornado are not as weather alert as them. So they have made it their mission to go dorm to dorm to give severe weather safety presentations.
