FORESTDALE, Ala. (WIAT) – A sinkhole continues to eat away at the ground near a mans home in Forestdale.
CBS 42′s Tiffany Westry first told you about the sinkhole inching toward Augustine Rutherford’s driveway on April 14, 2013.
During a recent visit, there were visible signs the hole has grown since then and can now be seen seeping through.
Rutherford’s neighbor owns the property, however Mr. Rutherford has been working tirelessly to figure out what to do or who to call about the hole. Scott Brande, an Associate Professor of Earth Science at UAB says there are only a few options when a sinkhole occurs on private property.
“Unfortunately there just aren’t that many organizations or businesses that are in that area. There are businesses called geotechinal firms or geotechnical engineering firms,” said Brande. He adds that these firms typically deal with larger issues, but may be willing to take a look at small scale collapses.
Brande also recommends taking a look at the Geological Survey of Alabama website which has mapped sinkholes all over the state and offers a number of resources on how to deal with such a problem.
