GPS installed in carjacked Mercedes helped locate Boston bombing suspects

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A GPS system installed in Alabama played a role in apprehending the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

The Tsarnaev brothers allegedly carjacked a Mercedes M-Class SUV after the bombings.

The GPS system was installed when the car was being built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance.

Boston Police were able to track the car using the Mercedes’ satellite system and stolen vehicle assistance function.

Police believe the suspects had intended to drive to New York to plant additional bombs before they were confronted in the Watertown suburb.
