BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Being a great teacher has its perks, such as having a surprise ice cream party thrown in your honor.
Kathy Perkins from Verner Elementary School in Tuscaloosa is one of the final four contenders for Alabama Teacher of the Year.
As a way of congratulating Perkins for her accomplishments, Blue Bell delivered ice cream for everyone at her school.
“Of course it’s great for me to be recognized,” Perkins said on Wednesday. “One of the greatest jobs of teaching is seeing the joy on the children’s faces and, needless to say, ice cream definitely provides that joy!”
Ms. Perkins is one of four finalists for the Alabama Teacher of the Year award.
The other finalists are Tracy Pruitt of Montana Street Academic Magnet School in Dothan, Alison Grizzle, a math teacher at Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham and Jeff Johnson, head of the science department at Hoover High School.
The winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 8th.
