BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police have two suspects in custody in relation to the murder of 76-year-old Birl Jackson Monday morning.
Investigators say Jackson and his lawn maintenance team had just finished cutting the grass at King Manor apartments in southwest Birmingham when the suspects tried to rob Jackson.
Neighbors report hearing three gunshots. Jackson was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment, but it was too late to save his life.
Jackson is remembered as a kind, generous man who was active in his church community.
“This is truly a tragedy because it’s a beautiful person that’s gone to be with the Lord,” church member Marilyn Bell says.
Jackson’s home in S.W. Birmingham is crowded with people Monday. Those who loved him say he did not waste a second of his 76 years.
“All they had to do was ask,” Bell says. “Whatever he had, he would give it willingly. He would have given him some money or whatever the person wanted.”
Jackson passes on that kindness to his grandchildren.
“My granddaddy, he was a lovable person,” 10-year-old Jayla Jackson says. “He always loved everyone in his family. If I do something wrong, he tell me not to do it again.”
Family members say their only comfort is their faith. Birl Jackson’s last stop — a parking lot beneath the white steeple of a church.
