JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) - The cold, wet weather is interfering with planting season … delaying farmers by several weeks.
Some farmers still have hundreds of acres left to plant before the unofficial May 15th deadline to plant corn in the region. Soybean planting has also been delayed because the moisture would rot the seeds. Many farmers who typically have their beans planted by now haven’t even started yet.
Farmers say they need about two weeks of dry, warm weather to get their planting finished and avoid major losses.
They add that earlier planting produces better yields which helps keep consumer prices down later on.
