BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – According to a new report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, only one in five Americans are getting the recommended amount of exercise.
The report comes only three years after the government issued guidelines for physical activity.
The guidelines recommended a combination of aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercises each week.
Nationwide, slightly over half of the respondents to the new study reported getting enough aerobic activity.
However, less than a third met the muscle-strengthening guideline.
Among all states and the District of Columbia, West Virginia and Tennessee tied with the lowest prevalence of people meeting both guidelines.
Colorado had the highest rate of people meeting the goals set for every adult.
Those goals are: at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, and moderate or high intensity muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups.
If that seems like too much, physicians agree that some physical activity is better than none.
