BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (2x): The two men appeared in court on Wednesday where they were formally informed of the charges against them. Burke is charged with capital murder with no bond, and Dunning is charged with murder in the commission of a felony. Dunning also has no bond.
UPDATE: According to a release from the Birmingham Police Department, a second suspect has been charged in connection with a homicide that occurred on Monday.
28-year-old Adrian Dunning of Birmingham has been identified as the second suspect. A murder warrant without a bond obtained for Dunning.
Dunning was arrested earlier this week on an outstanding warrant unrelated to the homicide investigation. He was later released on bond prior to investigators obtaining the murder warrant.
Both Dunning and Burke are in the Jefferson County Jail.
ORIGINAL: According to a release from the Birmingham Police Department, a suspect has been charged in connection with a homicide that occurred on Monday.
The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Donovan Burke of Birmingham.
A capital murder warrant has been obtained for Burke, and he is in the process of being transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
On Monday, 76-year-old Birl Jackson was shot outside of a church on 209 3rd Avenue Southwest.
According to investigators, Jackson and his lawn maintenance team had just finished cutting the grass at King Manor apartments in southwest Birmingham when the suspects tried to rob Jackson.
Neighbors reportedly heard three gunshots. Jackson was transported to UAB Hospital where we was pronounced dead.
The second suspect in the case was arrested and made bond on outstanding warrant.
The outstanding warrant is unrelated to the homicide investigation.
