Town mourns the loss of beloved assistant fire chief

EUTAW, Ala. (WIAT) – Stanley Martin was known around Eutaw as a go-to guy when you needed help.  He often assisted neighbors with his tractor, he helped little old ladies around town, and he fought fires.  Nearly 20 years ago, Martin joined the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department because he liked to help people.  At 71-years-old, he was still active as the department’s Assistant Fire Chief.

Early Monday morning, Martin was called to a fire  just across the street from his own home.  Martin was good friends with Dorothy and Otis Robinson who lived there.  Firefighters later learned the family was out of town.  Martin’s friends say he hurried over to the home before other volunteer firefighters had responded.  While Martin was on scene, he began to complain of shortness of breath.  The fire chief called for an ambulance, but before it arrived, Martin stopped breathing.  On scene personnel attempted to resuscitate Martin without success.  He was pronounced dead at Greene County Hospital.

The visitation and funeral for Martin will be held at Eutaw Baptist Church at 225 Main Street Eutaw, Alabama.  Visitation is from 6-8pm and the funeral is scheduled for Friday morning at 10am.  The graveside service is at Mesopotamia Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, which is located at just past Greentrack on County Road 208 Eutaw, AL 35462.  Call 205-372-0904 for more information.   Family is also asking that firefighters from all departments are welcome to attend the services.  They are asking that firefighters wear their fire service uniforms.
