Final Tee Times

AUBURN, AL (WIAT) – The Alabama women’s golf team continued to blister the the Auburn University Club course on Friday. They ended the day at 22-under par for the second day in a row to take a commanding 14 stroke lead over second-place Tulane heading into Saturday’s final round.

Three Tide golfers sit atop the individual leaderboard. Stephanie Meadow fired a 6-under 66 on Friday to head into the final round with the individual lead. Jennifer Kirby & Emma Talley are tied for second at 6-under. Talley came into the day with the individual lead, but shot a 1-under 71 to fall four shots behind Meadow.

“It was pretty solid,” Alabama head coach Mic Potter said of his team’s play on Friday. “Jennifer Kirby had a bogey-free 66, so we have had three bogey-free rounds this week, which is always nice. Stephanie (Meadow) and Jen (Kirby) are both All-Americans and they have done great things in junior and college golf, so they are comfortable in these situations. They had scoring opportunities today. The greens are pretty similar to what we have been practicing on, so I think they are fairly comfortable.”

“I played really well,” Meadow said. “My putter caught fire and I made a lot of long ones. Everything just went my way.”

The top-8 teams will advance to next weeks NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga. The top-2 individuals will advance. Alabama will play with Tulane and Arkansas in the final round. Tee times have been moved up 30 minutes for Saturday’s final round due to weather and the Crimson Tide are scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. on the first tee.

Second Round Quotes (Provided by Auburn Media Relations):

Alabama Head Coach Mic Potter

On the team’s play today…

“It was pretty solid. Jennifer Kirby had a bogey-free 66, so we have had three bogey-free rounds this week which is always nice. Stephanie and Jen are both All-Americans and they have done great things in junior and college golf, so they are comfortable in these situations. They had scoring opportunities today. The greens are pretty similar to what we have been practicing on, so I think they are fairly comfortable.”

On the play of Stephanie, Jennifer and Emma Talley…

“We always expect Jennifer and Stephanie to shoot somewhere around par and it is a bonus when you get a 6-under from both of them. They are our leaders. They have been here before. They seem really comfortable out there.”

Alabama Junior Stephanie Meadow

On her play today…

“I played really well. My putter got on fire as I made a lot of long ones. Everything just went my way.”

On the team’s performance…

“It has been awesome. All of us have worked hard. We just have to keep doing what we are doing. It is not over yet.”

On what the team has to do tomorrow…

“We have to go out and do our best, one shot at a time. That is all we can ask for.”

Auburn Student Assistant Coach Danielle Downey

On what was different today…

“Yesterday I felt they put too much pressure on themselves. They were trying to be a little too perfect. I told them after the round ‘The best scores were in the morning and we have the morning tomorrow. Play like athletes and be yourself.’ They have a perfect gameplan. They showed up today as different golfers. They went out and they weren’t scared. They were agressive. This is how they should’ve played all year. I am happy that Coach (Kim Evans) can see a good score on the scoreboard even though she isn’t out here. I am really proud of anyone. We put ourselves in a good position for tomorrow.”

On the play of Marta Sanz…

“I didn’t get to see much of it, because when she gets it going you just let her do her thing, and she did her thing. We are really proud of her. That set the tone for us. We had a couple other good scores come in for us. It was definitely a big comeback from yesterday. It was huge for our team. We are really proud of her.”

On Carlie and Jamie’s play…

“Carlie is still searching for that under par round. She is getting closer. Jamie is a walk-on freshman and to come out and shoot a 73 in Regionals and under pressure, I am proud of her. They came back, and that is what we have stressed all year.”

On being in a good position tomorrow…

“It set them up for anything. If we had this round yesterday it would put us in a position to make the top-eight. Anything can happen tomorrow. They can make their own destiny. I have nothing but faith in them.”

Auburn junior Marta Sanz

On how the team playing well…

“It is unbelievable how everyone played today. I am so proud of Jamie Yun shooting a 1-over. Carlie Yadloczky and Victoria Trapani hung in there. As a team I am proud of how we played. We are going to be in the morning wave and have a chance to go to Nationals.”

On going into tomorrow’s round…

“I think today’s round shows the entire team what we can do instead of doing what we did yesterday. We know the holes, and we know the breaks. It should be a perfect setup for us to qualify.”
