CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) – A Cullman family led a march to celebrate global HAE Awareness Day.
HAE stands for hereditary angiodema, a little known disease that causes deadly swelling.
This is the second annual Lyndon Brooke Stidham Memorial walk for HAE Awareness.
Hillary Schafer’s sister died from the disease at the age of 12.
She says because symptoms mimic other conditions, patients are misdiagnosed almost 70 percent of the time.
Organizers say in the past year, patients, doctors and drug companies have helped raise more awareness about the disease.
