BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – 50 years ago, proms at all Birmingham City Schools were cancelled.
On Friday night, those who lost out on that rite of passage finally got the opportunity to enjoy the prom they never had.
Hundreds gathered at Boutwell Auditorium for the 1963 Historical Prom on Friday evening.
Many of the students involved in 1963 were a part of children’s marches during the civil rights movement.
School leaders punished them by not allowing them to have a prom.
On CBS42 News at 10, Chris Womack will have the story of a group of people who never got the chance to enjoy their prom in 1963, but they finally got that chance on Friday.
