Police search for assault weapon shooting suspect

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  (WIAT) – Police are looking for the suspect who they say approached a male victim sitting on a porch and shot him multiple times with an assault weapon.

Norwood Elementary School is right across the street from the scene of the shooting. It happened outside an apartment shortly before 2 p.m., according to Sgt. Johnny Williams, with the Birmingham Police Department.

“The victim was outside in the area when the suspect approached. The suspect opened fire on him. He tried to evade the gunfire. He ran for a short distance before he fell to the ground suffering from his injuries. Whereas they are very serious injuries, we don’t believe that they’re going to be life threatening injuries,” said Sgt. Williams.

Sgt. Williams says they don’t know if the suspect fled on foot or in a vehicle.

“That’s exactly what we’re trying to find out right now. We’re hoping somebody will come forward and help us on this investigation,” said Sgt. Williams.

He says the victim was taken to UAB Hospital and at last check there were no suspects in custody.

Norwood Elementary School was on lockdown earlier, but was later given the all clear from police.

We spoke to one woman who has lived in the Norwood area for thirty years and heard the gunshots Wednesday afternoon.

“We want it to be safe in our neighborhood. And only thing we can do is probably, basically the neighbors kind of stick together or whatever and see if we can rid a lot of them… of the ones that’s down in here that don’t live here that probably would cause the shooting,” said Lois Adams.

Another woman whose mother lives near the scene gave us her reaction to the shooting.

“These kids be around here playing and like I said, he could have shot anybody, but thank God didn’t nobody get killed,” said Cassandra Martin.
