HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) – Attorney General Luther Strange and members of the Alabama Electronic Security Board of Licensure, are warning consumers to be cautious of companies using scare tactics to pressure you into purchasing or upgrading security products that you may not need.
During a press conference at the Homewood Senior Center, Strange said that the elderly are a particular target for such companies.
The Alabama Electronic Security Board of Licensure receives a high volume of complaints during the summer months. According to the board the increase of part-time job openings draw a large amount of non-professional, unlicensed sales staff to such companies.
Strange says the sales representatives are typically young college students who are recruited by a company and work on commission.
Jone Phillips is 77 years old and lives on her own. She knows she has to be cautious.
“There are some people that will take advantage of anybody, you know that, and old people catch the brunt of that,” she said.”
They hit neighborhoods and talk about recent burglaries, claim they can get you out of current contracts and put the pressure on with the “buy today and get it for free” pitch.
Before you purchase anything you should ask to see their state issued license. Every electronic security sales person or installer should have one.
John Hinds, owner of On Guard Security, says legitimate security companies lose business because of the unscrupulous practices of others.
“We get a lot of customers calling us to ask us if we have somebody in their neighborhood offering upgrades on the system or questions about the person who was there because they were suspicious,” said Hinds.
Anyone suspicious of a door-to-door salesperson representing themselves as a locksmith or alarm company employee is urged to ask to see their state issued license or call the Better Business Bureau to verify the company.
