UPDATE: Shooting off of 17th Avenue North, Norwood Elem. no longer in lockdown

(WIAT) –   UPDATE (3x): According to Michaelle Chapman, the lockdown on Norwood Elementary School has been lifted after receiving the all clear from the Birmingham Police Department.

UPDATE (2x): According to Birmingham Police Department Sergeant Johnny Williams, the suspect in the shooting approached a man who was sitting on his porch just before 2 p.m.

The suspect opened fire on the man using some type of assault weapon. Police say the suspect fired several shots.

The man tried to run for a short period of time but was unable to escape.

He has been taken to a nearby hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries relating to a gunshot wound sustained when the suspect opened fire.

Birmingham Police do not believe that the injuries are life threatening.

No suspect is in custody at this time, but police are canvassing the neighborhood searching for any leads.

UPDATE: According to Michaelle Chapman, the Director of Communications with Birmingham City Schools, Norwood Elementary School has been placed on lockdown.

ORIGINAL: Birmingham Police Department has confirmed that there was a shooting at 3218 17th Ave. North.

Police are currently on the scene.
