BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – As the weather continues to be more and more conducive to spending time by the swimming pool, it’s important to take keep safety a top priority.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 390 children younger than 15 drown while swimming each year.
Three in four fatalities are children younger than five years old.
The American Red Cross says most incidents occur in the backyard, so it’s important for everyone to think like a lifeguard.
The Red Cross advises anyone who finds themselves in an emergency situation around a swimming pool to get help from others and call 911 if necessary.
Additionally, the organization encourages anyone to learn CPR and for all family members to get comfortable in the water before heading to the pool.
