BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Beef prices are on the rise in the United States, something that may have caught the eye of shoppers over the Memorial Day weekend.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, choice grade beef costs an average of $2.11 per pound.
That’s the highest it’s been since a 2003 spike brought on by a case of Mad Cow Disease.
According to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Memorial Day weekend is third when it comes to beef sales.
Labor day is second and the Fourth of July is first.
The high beef prices are blamed on droughts in cattle states.
