SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WIAT) – In observance of Memorial Day, many people in Alabama have paused to reflect on the sacrifices of services members who have served the country.
In Spanish Fort, a ceremony was held to commemorate the opening of the new Alabama State Veteran’s Cemetery.
Governor Robert Bentley was the guest speaker.
He says he is proud to honor Alabama veterans.
“We have over 400,000 veterans that live in Alabama, almost 10 percent of the population. That’s as high as any state per capity, and I’m so proud Alabama is a patriotic state,” Governor Bentley said. “We have many veterans that live her, and I’m proud of every one of them.”
The cemetery can accommodate the remains of thousands of veterans.
Right now the cemetery is 22 acres, but when it is complete it will span 103 acres.
