Preparing for the worst; Disaster Drill Day in Jasper

JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) – Preparing for the worst, a toxic chemical spill and jail riot both happening at the same time were the scenarios for Wednesday’s disaster drill in Jasper.

The Department of Homeland security sponsored the event.

More than one hundred first responders attended the drill from across northwest Alabama.

They spent the day playing out several different jail uprising scenarios, as well as, responding to a toxic chemical leak which injured several people.

The simulation was treated as a real-life disaster with several streets surrounding the chemical leak shut down for most of the day.

Jasper plans to hold the disaster training every year as part of the National Incident Management System  … the way the program works is regardless of how many emergency workers are involved in the incident, there’s one leader for every five responders.
