BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Macular degeneration is a condition that can create vision problems for older adults.
It can make it difficult for sufferers to recognize faces and see using their peripheral vision.
Now, there’s technology that could help change that.
It starts by removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with a tiny, telescope-like object that acts as a magnifying glass.
“It’s a three-times telescope, which means, theoretically, it improves vision by almost three times,” Susan A. Primo with the Emory Eye Center said.
The new technology requires about 12 weeks of training and rehab for patients to master the new device, and it’s only implanted in one eye.
