Schools in Texas town have new storm-safe rooms

JARRELL, TX (WIAT) – 16 years ago, 27 people died after a massive EF-5 tornado leveled part Jarrell, Texas.

Now, school administrators are learning from the past to protect students in the future.

The newest schools being built in the town are designed with extra rooms that are reinforced to be storm-shelter grade.

The extra rooms are located within the school building.

Superintendent Bill Chapman says even rooms with windows have an added protection if anyone is unable to reach a safe room in time.

“All of the windows have a protective glaze that makes it more safe if it’s broken,” Chapman said.

The shelter-in-place construction adds about $250,000 to building a school, but Chapman says adding tornado protection is well worth it.
