CENTRE, Ala. (WIAT) – With movies generating billions at the box office mainstream multiplex’s are popping up like never before.
But in Centre, movie goers are getting a classic experience with a digital twist.
The 411 Drive-In in draws people from hundreds of miles away.
Shawna and Ron Williams drove an hour from Georgia to see a movie that was playing much closer to home.
The couple has stopped in a half dozen times over the last decade. They say the drive-in offers a bit of nostalgia for them and a chance to to get away.
And Ron Williams says the nostalgia goes beyond the theater experience itself; at $15 a car, regardless the number of passengers, he says you can’t beat the prices. “You can’t touch it… I mean for the price and what you get and how far the theatre has come, this is wonderful.”
And guests aren’t getting a crummy picture either.
Owner Rex Johnson invested in a pair of $75,000 digital projectors last month. There’s no more film. Movies are downloaded to a hard drive. That means guests are getting a picture twice as bright in HD quality.
Johnson says his family is doing what it takes to keep their 60 year old business relevant to movie goers. It’s a testament to his father and grand father who loved the movie business. “Both my grand daddy and father both would really love it. They like progress and they love this business. You know we kept it going.”
