ANNISTON, Ala. (WIAT) – Alabama’s prisons are running at double the capacity and that could put the state on a path to a federal lawsuit, which has lawmakers pushing for a solution.
State Representative Barbara Boyd of Anniston is pushing for the creation of a county run women’s correctional facility in Calhoun County.
Boyd hopes the facility would ease over population problems at Tutwiler prison and help rehabilitate women who are serving time for non-violent crimes.
Boyd wants to use an existing facility that has been used as an extension of the county jail in the past.
Boyd says it wouldn’t take a lot of money to bring the 60 bed facility up to federal requirements.
