BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – An affordable housing crisis continues to impact tens of thousands of families across the United States, and the same problem is occurring in Alabama.
That’s why a collaborative effort of housing organizations is highlighting National NeighborWorks Week.
The effort allows the media to see a glimpse of a problem that is plaguing communities – foreclosed homes which can be renovated for affordable housing.
Property in northwest Birmingham is being repaired with federal money so that a family can move in and pay a reasonable rent or mortgage.
“We help families, in most cases, prevent foreclosure, but in the cases where foreclosure occurs, we take that property, rehabilitate it and then put it on the market at an affordable cost,” Jack Green said.
The rehab project is just one of many in the Birmingham area where Community Action Partnership and Neighborhood Housing Services of Birmingham are working together to get families into affordable housing.
