TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – Following a second outbreak of tornadoes in Oklahoma, many Alabamians are again asking, “what can I do?” There have been local organizations helping with donations from the beginning, however; the second Oklahoma tornado outbreak has caused a spike in the number of items and inquiries.
The Silent Tide is a group that formed for the counter-protest of the Westboro Baptist Church, which came to protest at the University of Alabama in May. Westboro officials claimed that the April 27th tornado in Tuscaloosa was an indication of God’s wrath and displeasure with the city. The Silent Tide is made up of 200 plus men, women, and young people from across the state. However, after Westboro left Tuscaloosa, the group’s numbers began to dwindle. That all changed when the first line of tornadoes tore through Oklahoma. The Silent Tide banded together again to collect monetary donations for Oklahoma storm survivors. They have also held a variety of events, like a blood drive. However, on the night of The Silent Tide’s benefit for Oklahoma, the second wave of tornadoes hit.
The Silent Tide is continuing to collect monetary donations to send to the people of Oklahoma. So far, they have collected about $200. For more information on how you can help, visit https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Silent-Tide/377865072335045
The University of Alabama’s Community Service Center is also currently doing a Giftcard Drive. They are asking that people send in giftcards from national retailers to be sent to Oklahoma storm survivors. They ask that the gift cards have no expiration date or fees. UA officials say they believe the giftcards will be the most useful donation for the tornado victims at this point.
UA is also conducting a survey right now to see if any students, faculty, or staff would be interested in a service trip to Oklahoma sometime in the fall. For more information on how you can donate and to fill out a survey visit: http://www.volunteer.ua.edu/
