Deadly Deception: Lead at Maclin Park

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Results are starting to trickle in on soil testing from an EPA Superfund effort to identify contaminated properties in North Birmingham Communities.  EPA on scene coordinator Greg Harper says they should finish testing the last 50 properties by the end of this month.

Harper says lead levels were above the RML (removal management levels) at Maclin Park in Collegeville.

Harper says the RML, “is a tool for the EPA to use to see where to proceed.  It is not a cleanup level.”

Maclin Park is in Birmingham City Councilor Maxine Parker’s district. Ms. Parker tells CBS 42 she is waiting for the EPA to finalize their numbers and plans to set a date for the EPA to present their findings to the Birmingham Parks and Recreation Board.

In all the EPA planned to test approximately two thousand properties.  They gained access to about one thousand, one hundred properties.
