BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – For years, people have issued complaints about abandoned buildings in Birmingham.
Now, the city finally has the authority to do something about them.
Mayor William Bell joined Governor Robert Bentley in Montgomery on Wednesday as he signed the Land Banking Bill.
The legislation knocks down barriers to cleaning up eyesores.
Birmingham usually does not have the titles to the abandoned buildings.
“We have far too many houses that require some attention to,” Mayor William Bell said on Wednesday. “In the past, we’ve only had the option of going in and condemning the house and knocking it down. Now, this gives us the ability, in some cases, to save houses that in the past we could not save and rehabilitate.”
An added bonus to those who live near abandoned properties is that the plan will help increase property values.
