CBS42 employee family members who work at the Redstone Arsenal where the “blob” was over say the skies were clear. No smoke, no bugs or bird flocks. Still no explanation for this radar echo that grew in size. Helicopters were spotted in the afternoon. Sometimes “chaff” which involves military aircraft can produce images on radar.

Update:

Chaff

“Chaff” was spotted lying in the area where the “blob” on the radar was. Chaff is used to distort radar images. WHNT-TV and researchers at the University of Alabama-Huntsville believe that may have caused the radar echo.
