BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Safety and preparation is the focus of a mock drill planned by UAB’s Emergency Management team.
The mock drill, an active shooter scenario planned for Friday, will involve outside agencies, including the Birmingham Police Department and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
UAB Emergency Management and Safety Executive Director Randy Pewitt says it’s important to do these drills routinely in order to keep everyone safe should a dangerous situation arise.
“The idea is to allow out university police department to do a field exercise to really get an idea of the kinds of things that are going to happen during that scenario,” Pewitt said.
He says the drill has been planned for a long while and is not prompted by recent tragedies across the United States.
