Airport passengers support lawsuit against contractors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — As construction continues at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, the Bresette family tragedy is not far from passengers’ minds.

“There was no cause for it at all,” Doug Ferrell says. “It was just negligence on the contractors or whoever put it up.”

The Bresettes’ lawsuit states all nine contractors involved in the project either knew or should have known about the instability of the display board, and that their negligence killed Luke Bresette and injured the rest of the family physically and emotionally.

“My heart just went out to the family because we have small children, and I can just picture what happened to those people,” Ferrell says. “Traveling, trying to get home then an accident right here in Birmingham.”

Veronica Golden is flying through Birmingham Thursday.

“It’s somebody’s fault. Somebody has to be held responsible,” Golden says. “Not sure who that is, but at the end of the day, somebody should be held responsible for that.”

No amount of money, however, can bring back a child. Judy Morgan just got back from Disney World with her grandchildren.

“We sure don’t want it to happen again,” Morgan says. “I’ve been warning my grandchildren not to walk up close to any signs around here.”

Ferrell hopes the lawsuit will deter other companies from being negligent in the future.

“I’d own this airport if it were me,” he says.
