SUMITON, Ala. (WIAT) – Women in Walker County are waiting in line to learn how to handle a gun.
A ladies-only firearms training class scheduled for Saturday was booked solid in about a day.
Thirty women enrolled in the Sumiton Police Department’s first-ever training class. Certified firearms instructors will show student the right way to handle and aim a firearm. They will also learn about ammunition and different types of firearms.
Officers say one of the most common mistakes people make is unintentionally discharging their weapon.
Although training is not required to get a permit, officers say you need to go to the gun range and get used to pulling the trigger, the sound of the gun, and the recoil.
Sumiton police plan to hold two or three more classes later this year.
