BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A new report indicates that designated drivers may not be as safe, or sober, as people are led to believe.
The report shows one-fifth of designated drivers are under the influence when they get behind the wheel.
Researchers in Florida tested more than 1,000 people as they left bars, including 165 who indicated that they were the designated driver.
Their research found that about 40 percent of those drivers had been drinking, including 18 percent who had enough alcohol to impair their driving.
The study was published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
