BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Opening statements began on Tuesday for a former Birmingham police officer who is accused of arson.
Curtis Thornton is charged with setting a string of fires in west Birmingham and Warrior in the summer of 2012.
The prosecution claims the Warrior fires took place while Thornton was off-duty.
Others took place in the area he regularly patrolled.
The defense made a plea to the jurors to give their client an equal chance, regardless of how outrageous testimony may be.
The first witness to take the stand on Tuesday was an investigator with the Warrior Police Department.
