BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - A 9-year-old boy who suffers from type one diabetes needs a special dog to help him stay healthy.
Special needs K-9s cost about $10,000 each. That’s a drop in the bucket, considering the service they provide.
Xander is a hyper-unaware diabetic and doesn’t feel the warning signs that come with a drop in blood sugar. Specially trained dogs can smell the change and will alert a child or parent that help is needed.
“I would like to have the money raised by the end of summer so that as soon as all three of the kids go to school we can start with the training because it is a long process,” Xander’s mother, Melissa Powe said.
