BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)– The numbers are staggering. 6, 000 abandoned and over-grown lots in the City of Birmingham. It’s an issue several mayors have struggled with. Now the current mayor, is pushing a new plan, with a big price tag.
These scenes are all too common throughout neighborhoods in the Magic City. As the city loses population, the homes are all too often left vacant, and the lots around them become a mess. To clean up neighborhoods that have suffered for years, Mayor William Bell is pushing the “Mow More” Program. Additional workers and new equipment would target thousands of properties. Finding supporters of the effort this weekend was no problem, but finding the money to pay for the work will be more of a challenge.
The total cost for the program is $9.5 million. Published reports say Mayor Bell will seek about $5 million to begin the program. Neighbors hope these neglected areas will get the attention. Council members appear split on the issue and whether this money is needed in other areas. The new fiscal year, begins July 1st.
