Research indicates iron pill dosage for pregnant women can be lowered

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – It’s a catch 22 for many pregnant woman.

One of the first things doctors generally do after telling a woman she’s expecting is recommend she begin taking iron pills.

However, many women say these are difficult to take because of morning sickness.

Now, there’s some good news for women that take the pills.

Taking only two pills a week, instead of the previously recommended dosage of one pill every day, may be just as helpful.

Researchers in Australia say that dosage is equally as effective as a daily pill.

The research indicated that taking two pills a week doesn’t change a child’s birth weight, early delivery or growth rate.
