Scientists studying cooling trend in the Southeast

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Most people know how nice the weather can be in Alabama.

However, many people don’t know that the Southeast is actually experiencing a cooling trend.

Dozens of scientists from across the United States have come to Brent for part of the summer to try and find out why.

On Wednesday, the scientists held an open house to show the people who fund their work how they are doing.

Instruments used by the scientists measure gases and particles in the air, and a daily balloon launch sends the instrument into the air to measure the weather.

They believe emissions from cars, factories and trees create a haze that blocks part of the sun’s rays.

This kind of research could eventually lead to a better understanding of how to manage air quality.
